Pipes that tell stories

Each Rizza pipe is a piece of life—of memory, of dreams, of passionate moments.

History

Since 2019, pipe-making has been more than a profession or a hobby for me; it has been a journey of self-expression. A pipe has become my tool for telling what I have lived in the past and what I experience in the present.

The Muse and the Mythology

The inspirations behind Rizza are diverse: an image, a poem, the tiny fungi hidden in the darkness under decaying forest leaves, objects on a hot summer afternoon, or even tales like The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.
Sometimes a pipe is born from the armor of a shogun or a forgotten helmet from battle.
At times, Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa sparks the idea for a unique, powerful form with twisted layers.
The Wushan pipe—with its organic shape, dark and light tones, and mysterious spirit—represents the legends and secrets of Mount Wushan.

The Ritual of Creation

Briar and morta woods, before reaching my hands, have spent years—sometimes centuries—within the earth, weathered by water and darkness.
Crafting a pipe from them is not merely work; it is a kind of ritual—an intoxication with history and mystery.

A Global Palette of Materials

With deep respect for the briar-cutters who unearthed and processed the wood, I choose each piece carefully, letting the wood and its cutter guide me.
In addition to briar and morta, I source materials from around the world for the shank, including:
Thin layers of hardwood from nut trees.
Colorful and mysterious African woods.
Horn from American, Chinese, and Indian bulls, and Iranian rams.
Antlers from Northern Canadian deer.
These choices are not only a tribute to nature but also add emotional and material depth to each pipe—layers that together narrate life and natural diversity.
Every time a smoker picks up a Rizza pipe, they touch layers of nature infused with thousands of years of history and life.

The Philosophy of Honesty (Wabi-Sabi)

I sometimes explore classical styles, but the Rizza spirit flows more closely with nature and the philosophy of wabi-sabi.

Beauty lies where others might overlook it:
– A scar in the wood grain shaped by the briar cutter.
– An asymmetrical curve, often more beautiful than any perfect form.

I do not seek to create flawless pipes. I seek to create honest ones—honest to the wood, to nature, and to the human spirit.
